What's Been Happening?

P.E.O. Sisterhood Performance

Members of SOA were thrilled to perform for the P.E.O. Sisterhood on May 1st.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood is an international woman's organization of about 250,000 members with a primary focus on providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide. The Sisterhood is organized with chapters throughout the United States and Canada, headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa.

There was an immediate kinship and sisterhood between SOA and the ladies of this great group of women.  For more information on the P.E.O. Sisterhood, please visit their website.

Awards & Installation Banquet

The annual SOA Awards & Installation banquet is one of our favorite events of the year because it's a time when we get to recognize our fellow members for their dedication, work ethic, and overall commitment to the chorus.

This year was especially magical as we welcomed our new Board of Directors and many appreciative gifts were given out throughout the evening for attendance as well as for Becki's special "W.A.R.T" award.  This year's recipient was given to our Grants Chair, Janice Dorris (pictured left)!  This is a never-ending job that requires a great deal of work and commitment and Janice does an excellent job for the chorus!

The big award of the evening is our "SAY" (Sweet Adeline of the Year) Award!  We had many deserving nominees this year and this award is special because chorus members nominate and vote for the overall winner.  We are very proud to announce that this year's recipient is our Performance Manager, Susan White (pictured right)!  Susan has worked in this position for many years and always does an excellent job for SOA!  Congratulations to all on a night that was filled with fun and appreciation!

Area Barbershoppers Big Pig BBQ Event

Some of us enjoyed a special day of friendship, harmony and great BBQ at the Area Barbershoppers Big Pig BBQ Event in May!  This event is hosted by the Atlanta Vocal Project chorus and is open to all area barbershoppers and fans of barbershop!  Join in next time for some great fun and sing a tag or two!

Check out AVP's website for more info!

Summer Regional Meeting "SINGsation"

We had a wonderful time in June at our Summer Regional meeting in Birmingham!  We enjoyed being the demonstration chorus for a fabulous coaching session with Lori Lyford!  Our director, Becki Hine, directed one of the regional weekend choruses and we all enjoyed quartet performances including our own Virtuosity and Powder Keg quartets.  It was a joy for us to see other regional choruses and quartets perform throughout the weekend!

BHS International  in Philly

What an amazing convention!  Several of us were able to attend the convention in Philadelphia and many were able to catch the webcast.  We couldn't be prouder of how well the Dixie District was represented!

Congratulations to our own hometown guys, Zamboni Brothers for making it to the Quartet Semi's and to A Mighty Wind Quartet as well as TNS Quartet (Nashville) and mic-testers, Lunch Break Quartet (Nashville) for making the Quartet Finals!  Congrats also to the Music City Chorus for representing the DIX so well in Philly!

SOA harmonizes "Field Level" for the Atlanta Braves Game

We performed the National Anthem at Turner Field on July 21st!  The Padres edged over the Braves in extra innings, but SOA wowed the crowd in sizzling SOA style!

Farewell Dear Friend...

Song of Atlanta lost one of our dearest and most dedicated members in May.  Sherla LeCraw sang with us for 35 years until 2004 when she had to leave the chorus due to health reasons.  At that time, the SOA Board of Director's made Sherla an Honorary Member.

In 1952, Sherla joined North Avenue Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir. She joined "Song of Atlanta" chorus of Sweet Adelines International in 1969. She also sang with the Gadabouts Quartet for several years.

Song of Atlanta members sang "Friends" and "It Is Well With My Soul" at her memorial service.  It was an honor for us to share harmony with her family and friends.  We felt her spirit with us and could hear her chiming in the bass part.  She was an important part of SOA for many years and will never be forgotten.  For more information, click here.
